Terms and Conditions: Talk: Listening to Ice, The Future of Survival@Locarno Film Festival, August 15, 2024

On Thursday August 15, at 5.30 p.m., the The Future of Survival, a new initiative to explore the future of cinema at Locarno Film Festival (August 7–17, 2024), will host Listening to Ice a conversation with artist and researcher Susan Schuppli, film scholar Nora M. Alter, and curator and theorist Doreen Mende (HaFI). The program consists of three public evening events (August 13–15, 2024) curated by filmmaker, media artist, and critic Kevin B. Lee who is also a former HaFI Residency Fellow. This event is realized with the support of the HaFI, as part of its ongoing artistic research project “Terms and Conditions. The Legal Form of Images.”

How can cinematic practices allow us to see and hear wounds of environmental and social injustice in spaces around us? What kinds of knowledge can be produced through cinematic listening?

The talk focuses on unique practices of cinematic intelligence produced through essay cinema and environmental filmmaking, creating a planetary archive of “material witnesses” and novel forms of intelligence. Susan Schuppli, a UK-based researcher and artist, will present her audiovisual investigations producing evidence to expose climate-related injustices. Nora M. Alter is the author of the newly published Harun Farocki: Forms of Intelligence, which critically assesses Farocki’s body of works. They engage in conversation with Doreen Mende from the Harun Farocki Institut.
